- Best practice: Machine both the head and block for perfect flatness.

Groove Cutting
- Engines <800 HP: Cutting grooves in either the head or block can suffice.
- Engines >800 HP: Cut grooves in both the head and block for a more robust seal.
- Always use a radiused cutter for precise groove formation.

Torque Procedure
- Initial Torque: 130 ft-lbs at startup.
- Hot Retorque: After reaching operating temperature, retorque while the engine is still warm.
- Check Valve Lash: Each retorque further compresses the gasket, reducing valve lash—re-adjust as needed.
- Final Check: Retorque at least once more before applying full load or RPM.

- Apply a liberal amount of lube to the nut, washer, and threads so that all studs see a consistent clamp load.
